Italian Court Convicts Egyptian Agents Over Regeni Kidnapping
The Rome Assize Court handed 10-year prison terms to Maj. Magdi Ibrahim Abdelal Sharif and Cols. Uhsam Helmi and Athar Kamel Mohamed Ibrahim after finding them guilty of kidnapping. Prosecutors had requested a life sentence for Sharif.
A fourth defendant, Gen. Tariq Sabir, was acquitted in the case.
Regeni, a 28-year-old postgraduate researcher at the University of Cambridge, disappeared in Cairo on Jan. 25, 2016, while studying trade unions and working conditions in Egypt.
His body was discovered days later beside a highway outside Cairo. Investigators found evidence of extensive physical abuse, including cigarette burns, broken teeth and multiple bone fractures.
The case has caused prolonged tensions between Italy and Egypt and has been marked by years of legal and procedural complications.
In October 2021, an Italian court suspended proceedings against the four Egyptian security officials, who were being tried in absentia. The court said prosecutors needed to make additional efforts to locate the defendants and formally inform them of the charges.
