US Urges Global Coalition to Secure Strait of Hormuz Amid Iran Tensions
According to reports, the US ambassador to the United Nations made the remarks during a high-level UN Security Council meeting on maritime security, stressing that global sea lanes cannot be controlled by any single state.
“The world’s critical waterways are not bargaining chips that belong to any one country,” he said.
The envoy accused Tehran of using the strategic waterway as leverage in broader geopolitical disputes, describing its actions as a form of coercive strategy with global repercussions.
“It is absolutely clear … this strait is not Iran’s to wield like its own moat and drawbridge,” he said. “It is not Iran’s hostage. It is not Iran’s bargaining chip. It is not Iran’s toll road.”
He also called on the Security Council to hold Iran accountable, citing alleged violations of international law and the UN Charter related to maritime conduct.
According to reports, he further pointed to concerns over the reported deployment of naval mines in the area, warning that such actions pose a serious risk to civilian shipping and international navigation safety.
