Syrian Army Assumes Control of US-Vacated Air Base in Syria

(MENAFN) The Syrian army has assumed control of the Qasrak Air Base in northeastern Syria following the withdrawal of US-led coalition forces from the facility, the country's defense ministry announced Thursday.

In a statement carried by a state news agency, the Syrian Defense Ministry confirmed its troops moved into the base — located in the rural outskirts of Hasakah — immediately after coalition forces completed their departure.

The handover was not without incident. Local sources reported that militants affiliated with the YPG/SDF terror group set fire to a number of vehicles inside the compound before Syrian army units established full control of the site.

Despite the withdrawal from Qasrak, US forces have not fully disengaged from the region. American troops retain a presence in both Qamishli and Hasakah through active security offices, and continue to operate out of the Istirahat al-Wazir base.
