Finnish Opposition Files No-Confidence Motion Over Rising Poverty
“According to a recent estimate, poverty will increase by tens of thousands if compensatory measures are not taken now,” Left Alliance parliamentary group leader Aino-Kaisa Pekonen said on Wednesday at a press conference in Parliament.
The initiative, spearheaded by the Left Alliance and backed by the Social Democrats (SDP) and Greens, criticizes the government’s economic approach and urges steps to support low-income citizens.
SDP parliamentary group chair Tytti Tuppurainen emphasized that climbing expenses are hitting many middle-income households and demanded accountability ahead of the government’s final budget discussions.
Greens leader Sofia Virta warned that nearly one in six children could soon fall into poverty, calling the situation “a national shame.”
Left Alliance chair Minja Koskela stressed the importance of preserving the welfare state as a foundation for national cohesion. The Centre Party did not participate in the interpellation.
