India Cosponsors UN Resolution Condemn Iran’s Assaults on Arab Nations

(MENAFN) India has joined other nations in cosponsoring a United Nations Security Council resolution condemning Iran’s recent strikes on Arab countries. The resolution, currently presided over by the United States, passed with 13 votes in favor, while Russia and China abstained.

The resolution, led by Bahrain and supported by 135 countries including the US, UK, Spain, Canada, Germany, Pakistan, Egypt, and Gulf Cooperation Council members, denounces “the deliberate targeting of civilians and civilian objects by the Islamic Republic of Iran, including airports, energy installations, objects necessary for food production and distribution, and critical civilian infrastructure, as well as the indiscriminate use of weapons in populated areas and their consequences for the civilian population, as well as attacks and threats on merchant and commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz.”

Indian citizens have been among the casualties in the ongoing conflict. Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar informed parliament that two Indian mariners have been killed and one remains missing. Numerous Indian-flagged vessels remain stranded due to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. Reports indicate that 37 ships carrying 1,109 Indian seafarers are stuck in the Persian Gulf, the Gulf of Oman, and nearby waters.

A Thai bulk carrier, Mayuree Naree, traveling to India, was attacked in the Strait of Hormuz, though the Omani Navy rescued 20 crew members. Indian Foreign Ministry spokesman Randhir Jaiswal noted that “precious lives, including of Indian citizens, have already been lost in multiple such attacks in the earlier phase of this conflict and the intensity and lethality of the attacks only seems to be increasing.”
