"The action recalls the worst moments of interference in the politics of Latin America and the Caribbean and threatens the preservation of the region as a zone of peace," Lula said, urging the UN to "respond vigorously."

Multiple BRICS alliance partners have rallied behind Brazil's position. China's Foreign Ministry voiced "deep shock" over the developments, calling on Washington to "stop violating other countries' sovereignty and security."
