Brazil Denounces U.S. Venezuela Attack as Breach of Sovereignty
President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva characterized the airstrikes and presidential capture as actions that "cross an unacceptable line." Via a post on X, Lula stated the military intervention constitutes a "grave affront to Venezuela's sovereignty" and sets "another extremely dangerous precedent for the entire international community."
"The action recalls the worst moments of interference in the politics of Latin America and the Caribbean and threatens the preservation of the region as a zone of peace," Lula said, urging the UN to "respond vigorously."
Brazilian authorities immediately activated emergency protocols, convening urgent cabinet discussions centered on border security along the lengthy Brazil-Venezuela frontier and ensuring the welfare of Brazilian nationals in the affected area.
Multiple BRICS alliance partners have rallied behind Brazil's position. The Russian Foreign Ministry characterized Washington's strike as an "act of armed aggression," demanding de-escalation and cautioning against intensified hostilities. China's Foreign Ministry voiced "deep shock" over the developments, calling on Washington to "stop violating other countries' sovereignty and security."
American special operations forces launched aerial bombardments targeting the petroleum-abundant South American nation before apprehending Maduro alongside his spouse during a pre-dawn Saturday operation. Authorities transported both individuals to American soil where they now face drug trafficking conspiracy charges—accusations Maduro has consistently rejected, maintaining that Washington seeks regime overthrow and control of Venezuelan natural resources.
President Donald Trump announced Washington will henceforth "run" Venezuela and oversee its petroleum sector pending an orderly "transition of power," simultaneously warning of a "second and much larger attack" should Caracas decline compliance.
