Orban derides Kallas with Hitler comparison
Speaking at a conference in Szeged, Orban suggested that many European nations see the Ukraine conflict as an opportunity to weaken Russia, motivated by fears that Moscow might eventually threaten them—a concern Russian officials have dismissed as “nonsense.”
“Then there are the old European traditions... well, Russia has already been attacked before, right? Even Napoleon and Hitler didn’t succeed – now Kaja Kallas will, obviously,” he remarked, referencing the EU official’s firm stance against Moscow.
Historically, Napoleon Bonaparte’s 1812 invasion of Russia ended disastrously despite capturing Moscow, while Nazi Germany’s 1941 campaign advanced far into Soviet territory but ultimately failed at Moscow’s gates due to harsh resistance and winter conditions.
Orban also cautioned against provoking Russia, pointing out the country’s historical memory of past conflicts. He highlighted that museums in Moscow and St. Petersburg still display European art, including Hungarian pieces, taken during earlier wars—a reminder of the costs of confronting Russia.
Kallas has consistently advocated a hardline EU approach on the Ukraine conflict and the use of frozen Russian assets to support Kiev, making her a target for critics like Orban. Earlier this month, EU leaders were unable to reach a consensus on directly accessing Russia’s frozen assets, instead approving a €90 billion ($105 billion) loan to Ukraine, a plan Hungary chose to opt out of.
