Moscow, Washington Prepare for Putin-Trump Summit
The meeting comes as both sides prepare for a potential summit in Budapest, Hungary.
Earlier, Putin and Trump had a phone conversation on Thursday, where they explored the possibility of another in-person meeting.
Following the call, both leaders agreed to begin preparations immediately, with Budapest being considered as the venue, as confirmed by Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov.
Trump referred to the call as "very productive" and mentioned that the two leaders could meet in Hungary within two weeks, after their respective high-level delegations hold talks next week.
The previous in-person meeting between Putin and Trump took place in Alaska on August 15, marking the first face-to-face interaction between sitting Russian and US presidents since the beginning of the Ukraine war, which has lasted over three and a half years.
The Russian Foreign Ministry issued a statement confirming that Lavrov and Rubio had discussed "possible concrete steps to implement the understandings reached" during the Putin-Trump phone call.
However, the Ministry did not provide further specifics on the conversation. Meanwhile, the US State Department issued a statement confirming the diplomats' conversation focused on "next steps following the October 16 call."
A spokesperson for the State Department, Tommy Pigott, emphasized that the Secretary of State stressed the significance of the upcoming engagements as a chance for Moscow and Washington to collaborate on advancing a long-lasting resolution to the Russia-Ukraine conflict, in alignment with President Trump's vision.
