Nelson Mandela Foundation Denounces Seizure of Gaza Aid Flotilla
This convoy was on a humanitarian journey to deliver aid to Gaza.
The foundation called for the swift release of all activists detained during the operation.
In an official statement, the organisation expressed alarm over the reported actions: “The Nelson Mandela Foundation notes with deep concern the reports that Israeli forces have intercepted boats carrying activists from many countries and humanitarian aid bound for Gaza.”
The statement underscores the gravity with which the foundation views the incident.
According to a media outlet, the detained activists—apprehended by Israeli forces in international waters—are expected to be relocated to Ketziot prison, located in the Negev Desert.
This detention facility has been the subject of numerous claims involving mistreatment and systemic violations against Palestinian prisoners.
The foundation further emphasized its responsibility to speak out against injustice: “As an organisation mandated to mobilise Madiba’s legacy for the creation of just societies, both in South Africa and globally, we cannot remain silent when humanitarian initiatives are obstructed and when those working to advance human dignity are detained.”
This reinforces their commitment to advocating for human rights and equitable treatment worldwide.
South African writer Mohale Mashigo also publicly addressed the incident, turning attention to President Cyril Ramaphosa.
She posted: “Israel abducted my friend Zukiswa Wanner and other members of the Global Sumud Flotilla. They blocked aid and abducted those who were delivering it. That is who you’re selling coal to.”
Her message calls into question South Africa's political and economic ties with Israel amidst these human rights concerns.
