Ukraine, Russia Both Claim Shooting Down Drones
(MENAFN) Ukraine reported on Wednesday that its air defenses successfully intercepted 74 out of 95 drones launched by Russia since Tuesday evening. Meanwhile, Russian authorities asserted they destroyed 26 Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) over Russian territory overnight.
Ukraine’s Air Force detailed that Russian forces deployed Shahed attack drones and simulator UAVs from multiple sites, including Kursk, Millerovo, Orel, and Primorsko-Akhtarsk within Russia, as well as from Chauda in the occupied Crimean Peninsula.
By 0600 GMT on August 27, Ukrainian defenses had neutralized 74 Shahed-type and simulator drones across the northern, southern, and eastern parts of the country. The Air Force confirmed that 21 drones struck nine different locations.
Ukraine’s Energy Ministry reported that key energy and gas transmission infrastructure in six regions—Sumy, Poltava, Donetsk, Chernihiv, Kharkiv, and Zaporizhia—suffered attacks. The ministry said, “Power was cut in parts of Sumy after a UAV damaged equipment at a key substation at around 2200 GMT,” and a “comprehensive” assault on gas facilities in Poltava caused extensive damage.
On the Russian front, the Defense Ministry stated that its air defense units had shot down 26 Ukrainian UAVs during the night. According to the ministry’s statement, “Fifteen UAVs were destroyed over the Rostov region, four over Oryol, three over Belgorod, two over Bryansk and two over Kursk.”
Rostov region’s acting governor, Yuri Slyusar, reported that drones were intercepted in Rostov-on-Don, Taganrog, Novoshakhtinsk, and four additional districts. He noted that several private houses and cars were damaged by shrapnel, but preliminary information indicated no injuries. Damage assessments are expected to continue throughout the day.
