US to pull out its forces from Iraq

(MENAFN) Reports indicate that American forces have begun hastening their withdrawal from Iraq, pulling out troops from Ayn al-Asad and Victoria bases.

Some units are being relocated to Erbil, the administrative center of the Kurdistan region, while others are being moved to a nearby Arab nation, according to local accounts.

The directive for the withdrawal reportedly came from the U.S. Embassy, with the drawdown proceeding in multiple phases under Iraqi government supervision.

This shift appears to move faster than the initial timeline agreed upon for winding down the U.S.-led coalition’s mission in the country.

On August 17, Iraq’s security advisor Hussein Allawi stated that the presence of the coalition in Baghdad and at the Ayn al-Asad facility “will end in September.”

Iraq and Washington had previously reached an understanding in September of last year to oversee a step-by-step removal of coalition troops.

Currently, about 2,500 American soldiers remain stationed in Iraq as part of the force established in 2014 to counter the Islamic State.
